Physics of the Release

I found this article on the web yesterday explaining the physical characteristics of the finish. It gave me some amazing insight into what goes on throughout the drive and how to release the spoon cleanly from the water. It's a bit technical and I had to read a few paragraphs again to understand them. Note that the 'y-direction' and 'x-direction' on the graphs refer to the directional axes of the photographs: so 'x-direction' is the horizontal (transverse) direction (across the shell from pin to pin) and 'y-direction' is the vertical (longitudinal) direction (the direction in which the shell is moving).
